an experiment

Alright, so for everyone who checks out this post, here is the deal. I am polling a focus group with questions about elements of the Sunday service. This is looking like the best forum for that, so we're going to try it. If you read this post and would like to comment, you are more than welcome. However, if you are not in the focus group, please don't dominate the comments on some pet-peeve issue of yours, the discussion really is intended for them. But like I said, please feel free to participate.

So the way this series of posts will work is that I will pose a question or two about a single element of the Sunday service and then leave it there for discussion. There will probably be at least six or seven of these posts over the next couple of weeks, so keep your eyes open and your head on your shoulders.

First up: The Offering

What if we didn't pass baskets to take the offering? What if we put big boxes in the back of the room and just asked people to put their stuff in there at some point during their time with us on Sunday morning? Is taking the offering during the service important theologically? Why or why not?

Giving money back to the Lord is a form of worship so I really don't mind the plate being passed. On a more cynical note I think if we don't pass the basket some may just not give. Sure that's between them and God but why give them an excuse.

Any basis for the basket being passed or in the back seems more to do with tradition and what consensus prefers than theology.

I would say that in an effort to be open to the community it would seem better to have the box in the back. Money and church are hot button issues to the rest of the world. It is not a theological issue that I feel needs to be pushed on the visitor, and is subordinate to other reasons for corporate gathering which should not be diminished.

I prefer the box at the back. Wish I had some great theological reason for this, but I don't. I just imagine when I read the bible and it talks about people presenting their offerings as something that is done very personally. For some reason the passing of the plate skews that image in my brain.

I think it's pretty easy to not listen to the Holy Spirit in this area when you don't have a reminder. Even if you choose to pass the basket around once a month, I think the visable reality that everyone is needed is important. And to remember that it is (for some the biggest) act of faith. What better place to practice that than in a service of worship?

I think that would be a good idea. To a certain extent it feels as though it is a break in the morning where peoples focus is taken away from the teaching or the corporate worship.
