John was addressing people who had recently encountered false teachers who had caused them to doubt their salvation. The recent division of the fellowship caused by the false teachers caused many believers to doubt about their salvation. John writes 1 John to assure them of their salvation and of their eternal life in God.

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)
