Survey of the New Testament: General Epistles & Revelation

There are many pervasive themes throughout the book of James: the tongue, favoritism, perseverance in the midst of persecution. However, all these themes can be categorized around two major themes: the relationship of faith and works and the comparison of pride and humility.
As the scattered church endures persecution, it is testing their faith and making them mature, for their faith is being confirmed through the “works” of endurance. Those who claim to have faith, but ignore those who are lowly and persecuted have demonstrated that they do not understand the very nature of the gospel, and their faith is therefore in question. Persecution is not a sign of God's disapproval, but God's favor. God opposes those who are rich, those who oppress the lowly and those who are arrogant. But God grants his favor to the poor, the suffering the humble and the persecuted.
