Survey of the Old Testament: The Writings

Grace Institute for Biblical Leadership

Fall 2006

Class Description

The Jewish people had experienced 70 years of exile in Babylon. Now a rag-tag group had returned to their homeland. But there was trouble back home. They faced resistance from Palestinian settlers. They began inter-marrying with foreign wives. The ancient worship practices had gone long unused, and the temple they were rebuilding to their God was a shadow of what was there before. Into this situation comes the priest, Ezra and the political administrator, Nehemiah. Between the two of them, the Jewish nation is reborn. Ezra sets out to teach the people by writing books of their history (1 & 2 Chronicles) and compiling a hymn book (Psalms). It is at this time, under the leadership of Ezra that the Old Testament begins to take its final shape. It is in this context that the "Writings" of the Old Testament find their fullness. Join us in the Grace Institute beginning September 20 for a look as we look at the history of Israel in the post-exilic period explore the literature of this period in our class Survey of the Old Testament: The Writings.
