Short-Term Missions

We want to encourage everyone (yes, everyone) at Grace to experience a short-term mission trip. Knowing that these trips can be costly, we are providing the opportunity to request some help. If you are going on a mission trip, please complete and submit this form to the church office. Let's discuss how we can best help you!

Haiti

Update from Haiti (11/9/11)

Hello Family and Friends,

We are so excited to share with you about our time here in Haiti! We all arrived here safely on Sunday and enjoyed meeting Jeff Hartley (our on site coordinator) and touring our home for the week. We are staying in an uncompleted hospital building and enjoy the comfort of our cots and delicious meals that are prepared by 3 fabulous Haitian women everyday. As we expected, it is very hot here so many of our team members have chosen to sleep on the roof at night to stay cool. We are drinking at least 1/2 gallon of water (dlo) before lunch. We are all safe and healthy! We are thankful for clean water for drinking and for showers. Who would have thought cold showers would actually feel good?! If you are hot and sweaty enough, they are amazing :)

We have had several opportunities to serve and work with the people so far. Our first day was spent touring the tent city. The poverty and devastation here is so much worse than we imagined. It is so humbling to see the conditions that these people live in. We know how truly blessed we are to live in our country. Despite their situation these people are still quick to smile at and talk with us. Children run out to greet us and want to play :) They are very friendly and are happy to have us here.

On Monday, we awoke to a hot sunny day and got right to work attempting to remove rubble from the remains of what used to be the old guest house for missionaries. It was laborious but rewarding work. We did manage to make a sizable dent in the pile, so that felt really good. We had some time to play and interact with the children from the tent village. They are really fond of jump rope, hand clapping games, and most love having their photos taken. They love to see their image on the instant review. We then were able to attend the church service, and that was a beautiful experience, to see such joyful worship and singing.

Tuesday brought another hot and sunny day. We went to work at the Girl's Home. The men replaced the tarp sides of the temporary living quarters with plywood. Though the girls home is livable, the girls are still afraid to sleep inside after the earthquake. They are mostly sleeping in the outdoor temporary living quarters. The women had their own work, which was painting the metal bunkbeds with a fresh coat of paint. In the afternoon, we were able to go over to the Boy's Home, and play with the boys, who range in age from 4-mid 20s. The younger boys got quite rowdy with the soccer balls we brought over!

Today, we continued work with the siding, and painting. The women also went back over to paint the bunks at the Boy's Home. After lunch, we returned to play with the children from the village, who were happy to see the jump ropes return! We are getting ready to return to another church service tonight, where we will be singing.

We just want everyone to know that we are doing well and having an amazing time. We love and miss everyone! Can't wait to see you and tell you about the rest of our journey in a few days.

Au revoir!

The Ministry: We are trusting God to win, build, and send college students at Oregon State University and the University of Costa Rica. We want every student that walks through the hallways of OSU and UCR to have a relevant and attractive opportunity to hear the gospel. We also want every christian student involved with Campus Crusade to be sent to the world. Whether they are a business person, a teacher, a politician, or missionary, we want them to sense God's call on their lives to be a part of reaching the world for Christ. brent.oneill@uscm.org, 541-914-5239, for more info or to make a donation.
